BUILDING TRUST IN FOLLOWERS is probably the most crucial skill that a leader can work on. Building trust centers on being a leader who lives on the foundation of CHRIST, CHARACTER, and COMPETENCE. Trusted leadership begins with people sensing that the leader is walking with the Lord by having a vibrant prayer life and encouraging others to seek the Lord in prayer. People also look for a leader who has both godly character and
competence. The absence of any of these creates insecurity and distrust among followers.
Trust is at the heart of being an effective leader. One can’t lead without trust. Let’s examine a key principle in each of these three key areas.
– CHRIST – Leadership comes from Christ living in a leader. People trust Christ and the level of intimacy that you as a leader possess at a heart level. This forms the basis of the vision, which is directly connected to God Himself.
– CHARACTER – Character qualities of integrity, honesty, and humility form the basis of having a trustworthy character. This, in turn, forms the basis of values that are directly connected to relationships.
– COMPETENCE – Being equipped and skilled are critical to trusting the mission, which is directly connected to the task.
We see the three-legged stool of trust: (1) Vision, Values, Mission, (2) Christ, Character, Competence, (3) God, People, Task. If any one of the three legs is shorter than the others, the lack of trust will grow to affect the whole.
