Fulfilling Your Purpose

– Walk in Good Works

“Make everyday count” is the message the Lord instilled in my heart several years ago as a result of the tragic death of my mother, Della.

During the Christmas season while planning to be with family, my father and mother had stopped at a local grocery store to buy some food items for dinner. They left the store and put their groceries in the car. While my dad stayed to warm up the car, my mom returned into the store for something additional. Upon exiting the store a second time, she crossed the street on the crosswalk heading toward the car. At that same instant, a younger man with his 12-year-old daughter was speeding through the parking lot in a large truck, not paying attention, and struck my mom. The impact threw her many feet forward, crashing headfirst into the pavement. Her last conscious words were, “I want to see my grandchild.”

Mom was life-flighted to a trauma hospital about 30 miles away. In the following days and months her life hung in the balance until she stabilized. However, she never again experienced coherent brain functions. She spent nine months dying, never recovering from the head injury and subsequent surgeries and treatments.

A life snuffed out in an instant! When a person least expects it, dreams, hopes, cares, and concerns can be gone forever. In a twinkling of the eye, this was my mother’s experience.

During this tragic time, the Lord brought this Scripture passage to my mind:

“Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:15-17).

Designed for a Special Work

Life can be filled with tests and troubles not of our making. We decide how we spend our time. We don’t choose the times in which we live, whether good or bad, yet, we do choose how we spend the time given us, whether short or long. None of us knows when our last day on earth will be, so live each day as if this was your very last.

When we embrace the attitude that we are designed by God for a special work, we approach life from a perspective of being on God’s mission rather than “what is in it for me.” We are wonderfully made to do good works—God’s work. Each of us is very special to the Lord and created to do special things.

We are His Workmanship

God has a purpose and plan for our lives, and to find our God-given purpose we need to start with a biblical template that keeps things in perspective –

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).

Let’s break down this verse:

  1. “For we are His workmanship” - God has a plan, purpose. We fit into His plan.
  2. “created in Christ Jesus” - We work “FROM Him” which precedes ”FOR Him.”
  3. “for good works, which God prepared beforehand” - We are to serve and help others; we extend God’s Kingdom, and glorify Him. We join God.
  4. “so that we would walk in them.” - We carry out God’s plan. It is a journey and process.

There are also a few cautions to watch out for. These are traps that cause us to lose focus of our purpose:

  1. Caught up in the things of the world. Investing our time, our lives, and resources in the wrong things.
  2. Entertaining ourselves to the point of having nothing to show for our lives.
  3. Failing to ask questions in order to set priorities.
  4. Not taking time to reflect on our lives and priorities.
  5. Not walking in the light. Not keeping our lives as an open book and giving others permission to speak into our lives.
  6. Trusting our own wisdom.
  7. Comparing ourselves with others.

As you boldly yet thoughtfully fulfill your purpose in the year 2020, watch how God uses you to advance His Kingdom!
