How to Build a Legacy of Influence with Future Generations

Reaching to the 3rd and 4th Generations

One of most powerful aspects of leadership is the principle that may get the least amount of attention, and it’s the 5th One Leader Foundational Leadership Principle of servant leadership –

“Leaders influence to the 3rd and 4th generations.”

One reason this principle can get so little attention is that most of us are focused on the current work in our lives. It’s a challenge to regularly think and act as a visionary on influencing and impacting future generations.

The Process

How do we build a strong influence with others today that will ultimately impact future generations tomorrow? Here are the top 3 attributes:

1. TRUST – Influence begins with trust and faithfulness. People trust when you follow Christ, embody Godly character, and display competence.

  • Build trust with integrity, honesty, listening, caring, and admitting fault. (1 Cor 4:2) Be faithful
  • Talk straight and be honest. Tell the truth. Let people know where you stand.
  • Demonstrate Respect and show kindness and caring. Recognize the contribution of others.
  • Create transparency by being open, real, and genuine. Tell the truth.
  • Right wrongs and apologize quickly. Make restitution, don’t cover up.
  • Deliver results by understanding expectations, doing the right thing, making no excuses.

2. EXCELLENCE – We are to authentically reflect Christ in all we do.

  • Do your very best rather than trying to be the best.
  • Reflect Christ with excellence and then exercise passion, diligence, focus, drive, serving, ideas, and persistence.
  • Always do the next, best, right thing (Colossians 3:23).

3. SKILLS - Leadership is skilled in investing and guiding others. We influence as we learn and improve skills to be more competent, effective, and fruitful. We work with excellence to the Lord. (Proverbs 22:29). The goal is to glorify God and help people find Christ. We all are to grow winning the lost and making disciples. Form will follow function.

The Bottom Line

Through some spiritual focus and tactical plans, you can be more intentional about influencing future generations. Share the unique perspective that God has given you!
