New Year and Renewed Focus on the Eternal

The Latest Attitude Boost Series Article

By now, you’re already settling into the rhythm of the New Year. Sometimes after the holiday season, the New Year adjustment can be jarring! But the one thing that will help us not only survive but thrive is our attitude.

Here are eight perspectives from Bruce Witt’s book, The Power of Attitude, that he recommends to make a lasting difference in your purpose and outlook -

  1. Always Be Thankful
  2. Live in Hope
  3. Fulfill Your Purpose
  4. Be Your Best
  5. Give Your All
  6. Put Others First
  7. Focus on the Eternal
  8. Attack the Day

Focusing on the Eternal

In our first series article last September, we discussed #8 – “Attack the Day”. Now, let’s look at #7 – “Focus on the Eternal”—more specifically, the eternal outweighs the temporal.

Christ calls us to seek God’s Kingdom first and the necessities of life will be given to us. “Seek first His Kingdom…and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). This attitude helps us to prioritize the choices of each day and of the future. Also, when we embrace the idea of a heavenly reward, our actions in this life will radically change. We are to live in the temporal world with an eternal mindset.

Ten Attributes in Our New Nature

When we possess our new nature and our spirit is indwelt by the Holy Spirit, we gain many benefits and advantages that are simply not possible for a non-believer. The following are ten attributes that we gain:

  1. Security – Our security is in the unchanging Christ and not in the accolades of the world.
  2. Significance – Our worth is based on the price God paid for us (Christ), not on our possessions or position.
  3. Satisfaction – Fulfillment is found in the eternal not in the temporal.
  4. Power – Our power comes from the infinite power of Christ rather than our limited resources.
  5. Life – We gain a life that lives on into eternity with God rather than holding on to a physical life on earth.
  6. Wisdom – God says He will give us His wisdom, which is far greater than our own.
  7. Vision – Vision comes from God who is beyond time and space versus our limited perspective.
  8. Love – We are loved unconditionally and forever by God rather than the conditional love of people.
  9. Wholeness – An eternal life makes us whole and restores us.
  10. Peace – God becomes our peace because we give up control and rest in Him.
Staying Focused on the Kingdom

The Kingdom of God is the rule of God to save us, and to save us is to bring us from destruction into the enjoyment of Christ forever. Staying focused on the Kingdom will require:

  1. Seeing life today from an eternal perspective. Perspective can change you. Start with the end clearly in focus.
  2. Being thankful in all things based on the expectation of future good. Thankfulness and hope are joined together.
  3. Being an overcomer. See tomorrow in the light of hope for eternity.
  4. Valuing life and things according to how long they will last. Things don’t last, people do. The only things that will last forever are people and the word of God. Treasure them.

Perspective changes everything. Look up to the Lord and see beyond to the future. He is speaking. Life is lived in the moment with an eye to the future. Our true reward is in eternity.

“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).
