“But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant. For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves” (Luke 22:26-27).
TRUE SERVANT LEADERS FUNCTION from a different source than the set of values found in world. The source of serving begins with Christ’s indwelling Spirit, who supernaturally serves and values others as God works His plan, rather than man doing something he is supposed to do. This Spirit-led serving transforms leaders and transcends the typical view of a servant leader. Spirit-led serving helps others for their good, values them, and accomplishes the work. This serving goes beyond what the world offers by the power of Christ leading and by keeping the true end in mind: Glorifying God and being Kingdom focused.
Leaders are called to a role of oversight and management of people. This is absolutely true for leaders of families. In these roles, leaders need to care for and look out for the best interests of the people they serve. In fact, it should reflect loving one another unconditionally. Other biblical terms would include blessing others, being devoted to others, helping, generous giving, loving without hypocrisy, and entering into another’s world.
“I think it’s beautiful how God has put the Body together. I need my weaknesses as much as I need my strengths because if I didn’t have my weaknesses I wouldn’t need you. And if I don’t have you, I’d be so much impoverished for the lack of relationship…We should give thanks for our weaknesses because it is the glue that holds us together in the Body. I should be thankful for what I don’t have because this creates a bond that you and I wouldn’t have otherwise.”

The devotion above was taken from the 52-week Devotional entitled “Experiencing Christ as Life and Leader”.
Many give a mental assent to this teaching yet are often asking, “What do I do? What does Christ as life look like?“ Too often Christians err by moving too far to one side or the other—reducing the Christian life to a list of do’s and don’ts, or they actually do nothing.
These inspiring weekly devotions are just some of the actions that reflect the life of Christ in each of us, and they explore four areas as we follow the One Leader, Jesus Christ –
- A Foundational Focus
- A Personal Focus
- A Relational Focus
- A Missional Focus
Be challenged, encouraged, and spurred on to a deeper walk with Christ.
